On a whim, I had a look at Clan of the Cave Bear (Michael Chapman, 1986). You can’t develop much character (or empathy or indeed interest) through dialogue when each utterance is typically two syllables long. I haven’t read any of Jean M. Auel’s books, but they must be pretty short.
